Exploring the planet custom style with the Moonen Navarino

As a top Dutch custom builder, Moonen Shipyards prefers to go with the flow of its clients rather than industry trends. The new #navarino concept is the latest example of this approach. Named after an island gateway to the Antarctic, this 47-metre world traveller combines the attributes of an ‘explorer-type’ motoryacht with an elegant profile appeals to all tastes. Key features include a strong space-enhancing monocoque structure, innovative stern #design and excellent fuel consumption.

One of the factors behind the Moonen success story has been the Dutch yard’s ability to offer clients totally custom motoryachts in all shapes and styles. Unveiled for the first time at the Monaco #yacht Show, the Moonen #navarino illustrates this point by taking a pioneering new approach to the perception of ‘explorer’ yachts.

We designed this concept to showcase the different ways Moonen owners can enjoy a modern and innovative world traveling #superyacht,” explains managing director Emile Bilterijst, a naval architect himself and part of the Moonen team that worked on this project with designer René van der Velden. “One of the reasons for Moonen’s reputation is our ability to offer motoryachts in all shapes and styles. In this respect the #navarino can serve as a starting point for a client seeking a go-anywhere motoryacht or as inspiration to go in a completely different direction.”

Ideal for all

Based on in-depth market research and client surveys, the #navarino includes all the facilities you would expect from a #yacht designed to have no barriers when it comes to world travelling. These are wrapped in a fresh and contemporary #design jacket with various first-time features.

Moonen opted for an ‘explorer-type’ #yacht to illustrate the yard’s custom philosophy because it is an area where some thinking outside of the box is well overdue.

In developing the #navarino we have moved away from the stereotypical image of explorer-type yachts as ‘toys for the boys,’” Bilterijst continues. “There is no golden rule which says world traveller superyachts need to have a masculine #design. With her sleek looks and sophisticated main deck layout, the Moonen #navarino will change people’s perceptions of how an explorer should look or who might prefer to be on board. And this is why we prefer to call her a ‘go-anywhere’ #superyacht.”

Track record

Moonen has already built various impressive yachts that have criss-crossed the planet, including the all-custom 42-metre Sofia, the 38-metre award winner Northlander and the more traditional 35-metre explorer My Issue. All this experience – plus the construction skills of the Moonen craftsmen and the yard’s engineering expertise – will be poured into the #navarino, which will be robust enough for travel to everywhere from Alaska to Argentina, in all types of seas.

The 47-metre #navarino has a monocoque structure, with the hull and main deck being a single entity. As well as offering major benefits in terms of strength, stiffness and weight, this means there are no side decks on the main deck. The result is an increase in volume and a full-beam interior across the entire main deck. These areas will be optimised with the client to ensure personalised relaxation during long expeditions, as well as to incorporate any wishes in terms of on board facilities. The optimum use of interior space makes the #navarino one of the largest 500 GT superyachts available on the market today.

Innovative design

In another new development, the aft deck lazarette of the Moonen #navarino is raised so that it is on the same level as the beach club. Dispensing with the normal split-level arrangement in this part of the #yacht generates a considerable amount of space for enjoying the alfresco life and nature close to the water. The #design team has lots of options for making the most of this unified space, the most pleasant place to relax when underway.

A further result of this arrangement is that steps lead down into the full-beam main lounge. The wide-bodied construction combine with a glass staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows in order to generate a very open feeling in the lounge of the #navarino. This is further enhanced by keeping the aft bulwark low, ensuring that the wide panoramas can be fully enjoyed.

The aft deck is also kept free of all obstructions by having the Navarino’s tenders and watersport toys stored on the foredeck. The wheelhouse is positioned quite significantly aft at the most comfortable location in terms of ship movements when at sea for longer periods. It also means that the views are not obstructed by the tenders and toys, while enhancing the yacht’s graceful overall looks. A comfortable seat in front of the wheelhouse is the ideal spot for the owners to experience the excellent views as well as the captain.

Future proofing

With rules protecting natural areas becoming increasingly stringent, the #navarino offers advanced options to ensure owners continued access to such regions while reducing their overall environmental impact. These future-proof solutions include the use of sustainable materials and solar panels, exhaust gas cleaning, heat recovery of exhaust gases and a hybrid propulsion arrangement.

Lengthy expeditions are further facilitated by the impressive amount of dedicated space available to hold the food and supplies required. They include a large area in the forepeak under the crew zone and additional storage beneath the raised aft deck. The #navarino can carry at least 50,000 litres of fuel and has a fresh water capacity of 12,000 litres.

An optimised hull #design in combination with the stabilizers will ensure a comfortable performance underway and at anchor. With an owner’s suite on the main deck and four guest cabins below, a party of ten can set out on this world traveller with no limits to their discovery plans.

The #navarino is a fine example of the custom possibilities on offer at Moonen. The yard is keen to hear people’s opinions and would welcome the chance to further develop the #design to an owner’s personal wishes.
