Desalto @ Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milan, 9-14 April 2019 Pavilion 5 Stand C09

Form defining material. Material shaping form. #design for character imprinting. Ongoing interaction between these elements is the recurring theme of the journey undertaken by #desalto, followed with coherence and conviction throughout its corporate history.

Now as then, an inclination towards exploration and an aptitude for experimentation, a passion for #design, focus on function, ability to align all the various players in the #design, are the keywords of an idiom adopted by the company, through which it has constructed within the lifestyle area its personal and distinctive story. A varied and constantly developing narration for capturing and meeting the changing needs and the new aspirations of people around the world.

For the #salonedelmobile 2019 the #desalto collection has gained new content, multiple and original, the result of work with international designers, choreographed and coordinated by Gordon Guillaumier, the art director who in one year has contributed to boosting Desalto’s intrinsic dynamism and energy.

Guglielmo Poletti’s strict #design capability uses a curved steel sheet to create the VOID collection, a family of small tables, benches and consolewhich put over clean volumes, lightness and, simultaneously, solidity. Wood and aluminium are instead the materials chosen by the designer for the MM8 table, which favours primary shapes underscored by the contrasting materials.

The clean, consistent #design of Eugeni Quitllet adopts and characterises the curved steel tube which becomes the structural core of STRONG - dining #table, chair, small #table and stool, the latter also designed for the outdoors.

Mario Ferrarini, with MUN, stakes on the perfection of the continuous and circular mark to create an appealing and empathic dining #table, which with its soft line can live with versatility and immediacy in any space.

Simplicity of lines and lightweight volumes are the expressive key of the range of STEP bookcases designed by Nendo, able to harmonise and blend in naturally with the entire collection.

The experimental mission of Atelier Oï has produced ARIA, an almost intangible armchair where the star feature is a tricot fabric which, in a single piece, wraps like a tensile structure around tubular steel, creating a convenient and comfortable chaise longue.

The new designs in the #desalto collection also include the KAZIMIR sideboards created by Gordon Guillaumier, where the understatement and rigour of the wood structure takes shape and gains textures through the use of marble and metal resins which bring to mind architectural volumes.

PRODUCT SHEETS

MUN

design Mario Ferrarini Studio

An empathic and informal seat developed around an unusual basket with generous sections which underline and hold padded cushions, hinting at clear comfort as welcoming as a warm embrace.

MUN echoes the perfect shape of a full moon, a continuous, circular, clear mark which can be personalised with the #desalto colours to compose in total freedom rooms that are different each time, possibly imagining a #table where the uniqueness of each guest echoes the diversity of the colour of each seat.

Upholstered seat with fabric covers and ø30 mm tubular steel frame.

55 x 55 cm h. 77 cm

MM8

design Guglielmo Poletti

The #mm8 #table explores the limits of material in relation to its structural properties, exploiting the physical qualities of aluminium. The construction brings an overall tension to the structure, allowing the top to reach a minimum thickness of 8 mm. The weights contained inside the two cylinders increase the rigidity of the surface, counterbalancing the forces in order to ensure high stability. The resulting composition gives the piece a #strong monolithic presence highlighted by the accentuated contrast between the impressive volumes of the base and the extreme thickness of the top.

Lacquer finish #table with 8 mm thick aluminium top and cylindrical double base covered in aluminium sheet.

300 x 120 cm h. 74 cm

VOID

design Guglielmo Poletti

The #void series was born as an exploration into shape in relation to the architectural concepts of mass and #void. Made up of different pieces, the collection features the extreme pureness of the volumes, whose profiles map out a solid which has been partially deconstructed and excavated. This subtle action of subtraction is translated into a #strong impact, thanks to the curving of the base which defines a space able to alter the visual perception of the objects.

Made in steel throughout, the construction allows the metal to reach a minimum thickness of 3 mm, increasing its structural properties thanks to the curving of the vertical elements.

ARIA

design Atelier Oï

The #aria chaise longue features a seat made up of a single piece of mesh fabric, tightened around the support structure in tubular steel. Without the traditional upholstery, the silhouette appears lighter. Comfort is not however undermined thanks to the ergonomic shape of the armchair and the volume, created by the tension achieved by the two buttons on the seat.

As its name suggests, #aria is a light, diaphanous interpretation of the classic quilting of armchairs. #aria is airy, heavenly, almost intangible.

KAZIMIR

design Gordon Guillaumier

A line of sideboards, a homage to the artist Kazimir Malevich, featuring the simplicity of the constructional principles which define the wood structure. The door panels are coated with marble and paste resins which project from the frame, referencing architectural volumes.

The series is designed with compositions for the living area and dining room, to coordinate with the tables in the #desalto collection, where the common denominator is material.

STRONG

design Eugeni Quitllet

“It’s the idea of using art to shape new ideas, taking the shortest road for the solution through a continuous form... Nothing more, nothing less.

Strong is that thin wall which separates the #void from the image of poetry.... It’s curving, bending reality to create the dream. #strong is a new alphabet for writing new stories... Nothing more, nothing less.”Eugeni Quitllet

STEP

design Nendo

A collection of bookshelves based on simple shelves which appear divided in the middle and slightly shifted vertically. The new #design relaxes the tension existing in the usual horizontal shelves and offers a further advantage: each shelf can also act as a bookend for books placed on the adjacent shelf.

The idea of the #design can be compared to that applied for homes. The existing horizontal shelves are similar to buildings while the #step shelf is more similar to a house with several storeys, where there are physical connections and relations between the different levels.

Each shelf is attached to the structure without screws and can therefore easily be removed or replaced.

Range of modular bookshelves in matt lacquer finish composite material. Removable shelves at predefined heights.
