Maison des Agrumes: Abimis for a villa in the heart of Caserta

The plan for the renovation of a retreat among the orange blossoms, by the studio AU40.

The 19th century villa which has recently undergone major renovations by the architectural collective AU40 is called “Maison des Agrumes” and has been transformed into an oasis of tranquillity nestled in the historic centre of the city of Caserta. It is a layered project, the result of a restoration of the main floor and the attic, and the construction of a new architectural structure on the ground floor. The result is an L-shape, where the rooms follow one another in a continuous flow and the indoor and outdoor areas intersect seamlessly.

The interior is defined by neutral and bright colours, populated by furnishing accessories in material and industrial-inspired finishes, such as leather, etched metal and steel, which live in harmony with more traditional furnishings. The vaulted ceiling and wide arched openings onto the inner courtyard, inherited from the history of the 19th century complex, define the open space for the living and kitchen area, and accompany the pergola courtyard, used as a relaxation corner, paved in Rapolano rough travertine, in line with the interiors. Finally, the view overlooks the private garden, protected by vegetation and complete with a swimming pool, sun terrace and sheltered shower area, made of the same stone. The Mediterranean resonances of the architecture, finishes and colours are therefore combined with the villa’s intrinsic classic details and contemporary interior choices that deliberately mark a new era. “In this timeless setting the steel kitchen emerges, like a spaceship, which represents a strong contrast,” comments Giovanni Maria Santonicola, one of the two founders of the AU40 collective, who continues by saying “the Ego model island by Abimis, located at the centre of the kitchen, is the fulcrum of the washing and preparation activities, reflecting the lights and shadows generated by the arches during the day.”

The Ego line by Abimis, designed by Alberto Torsello, stands out in the large open space with its rounded shapes and significant dimensions, becoming a reference point in the room, a module that designs the surrounding space. Ego is structured into two main blocks, both in brushed steel with handles in the same finish. The first island has a double sink and a large top for preparation and plating. The second is wall-mounted, with a single sink, double burners integrated into the top, an extractor hood and double mirrored cabinet at the ends, useful as a pantry or modern sideboard. The wide possibility to customise the blocks, measurements, finishes and equipment offered by Abimis, thus allows the development of kitchen and operational blocks that meet the needs of design, use and enjoyment of the surrounding environment. Made of AISI 304 steel, unalterable, hygienic, durable and suitable for contact with food, Ego is a solution with a strong professional imprint, found in certain details and configurations, such as joint-free worktops for improved hygiene and ease of cleaning; raised, spill-proof edges; high-capacity pull-out tops that can be configured in both internal and open compartments for maximum functionality and optimal space management; refrigerated storage compartments; heated tableware drawers; and temperature-controlled separated waste disposal.
