Zuiderzee Museum presents Kranen/Gille at Salone del Mobile

The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen presents its latest acquisition at Salone del Mobile from 14 to 19 April. The Combers Cabinet, a design of design studio Kranen/Gille, has been commissioned by this Museum. The acquisition consists of nine lamps with combed parts from the Museum's storage department, presented in a special made cabinet. After this event the Combers Cabinet will be exhibited in its entirety in the Zuiderzee Museum's indoor museum from 23 May onwards.

The presentation of the Zuiderzee Museum is located at Ventura XV Via Giovanni Ventura 15, 20134 Milano. Opening time Daily 10.00 – 20.00 Sun. 19 Apr. till 18.00 Unique objects  The lamps are made of three types of preserving jars from the 1920s together with gilt accessories like a pipe, sprayer and flask. The jars – partly sandblasted – form the basis for fascinating gilt accessories, which serve as reflectors in the lamps. This is what makes them unique objects that are not available commercially. Their unicity is enhanced by the addition of the inventory number on each lamp's foot. On
the walls of the presentation, blank silhouettes of the lamps are displayed. As a visitor, you are very welcome to draw in your own fascinating object. Combers Cabinet by Studio Kranen/Gille (left); Jos Kranen and Johannes Gille (right). Photos Erik & Petra Hesmerg Preserving.

For Kranen/Gille preserving was the basic principle of the design. In 1920 households all sorts of food were preserved in jars. Kranen/Gille used preserving jars on an earlier occasion, when they designed the MECK lamp for Cor Unum. Preserving, obviously, is any museum's core task. When they visited the Museum's depository, the duo became captivated by all kinds of curious objects with no apparent background story. This is how they stumbled across things like a pipe, a sprayer, a flask and a glass eye, as well as the stock of historic preserving jars. Kranen/Gille 'combed' nine objects from the depository, giving them a new life by gilding them and using them in the lamps. They invite visitors to provide each
object with its own story.

About Kranen/Gille Design studio Kranen/Gille was established in 2007 by Jos Kranen and Johannes Gille and is based in Den Bosch. Kranen and Gille, who met at the Design Academy Eindhoven during their studies, are constantly on the look-out for ways to combine various disciplines, crafts and their own collected aesthetic insights, with a view to creating attractive design objects. All works of art appear to exude the industrial revolution, with a touch of the natural structures that remind one of Karl Blossfeldt's photography.

About the Zuiderzee Museum
The Zuiderzee Museum is oriented toward the culture of the former Zuiderzee region and the present and future IJsselmeer area in the Netherlands. The Outdoor Museum accommodates authentic buildings from villages around the former Zuiderzee. In such places, old and young people can jointly come into contact with Zuiderzee culture. For example, visitors can participate in rope-making, drop in on Urk residents, or partake of a meal in a 1920s household. In the Indoor Museum, visitors can become acquainted with art, culture and heritage from before and after the closure of the Zuiderzee. There is also a ships' hall full of historical ships.

A characteristic feature of the Zuiderzee Museum is that it establishes a surprising connection between the culture-historical collection and present-day art and design. In 2013 and 2014, visitors to the evaluation site of the Zuiderzee Museum (Zoover het Zuiderzeemuseum) chose it as The best museum of the Netherlands.
