GAN Spaces is an original and unique concept, conceived by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola for #gan, the indoor brand of GANDIABLASCO. In these “Spaces”, traditionally flat items such as rugs, are transformed into three-dimensional volumes. The designs and colours of the rugs are reproduced over poufs, modules and accessories in such a way that they complement one another creating a coherent and customised “Space”. From her Milan-based studio, Patricia Urquiola has already developed three #gan Spaces collections for #gan: MANGAS ORIGINAL, MANGAS SPACES and BANDAS; each of them a natural successor to the previous one. In 2009, she launched MANGAS ORIGINAL, composed of a range of organically shaped carpets, far removed from the conventional rectangular format, as well as a colourful and warm approach reminiscent of a wool jumper from which the collection gets its name (mangas means sleeves in Spanish). Matching poufs were included with this first collection, which worked as a natural extension of the rugs themselves. A year later, in 2010, a new line called MANGAS SPACE was introduced, considered a natural extension to the previous collection. With MANGAS SPACE the poufs and other modules are no longer considered “just accessories”, instead they become the very heart of the collection. A similar collection in terms of textures but more modular, with more and bigger elements, and a more daring colour palette that succeeds in blurring the line between rug and furniture. In 2014 BANDAS SPACE was presented, with which Patricia Urquiola brought the modular concept to its very limits. It started off with the creation of long and fine rugs like bands or stripes, embroidered by hand by craftswomen in India.
