2019 Milan Design Week - Arazzi, a bespoke modular system in natural clay, by Matteo Brioni, design Studio Irvine

The #matteobrioni story begins in the early twentieth century, at the family’s originally quaint brickmaking kilns in the fields outside Gonzaga. And in the course of time it gradually developed into what is now a personal passion for clay and terracotta, a material that has since ancient times been a key element of architecture.

Matteo Brioni’s natural clay is selected and mixed in a process based on experience in building and a keen eye for the uniqueness of each particular territory.
The result is a healthy, pure and natural product, pleasant to the touch and sinuously adaptable to any form: for contemporary surfaces made with traditional techniques.
Under the expert art direction of the architect Marialaura Rossiello at Studio Irvine, Brioni is now the best known maker of natural clay products.

For Milan #design Week 2019 #matteobrioni continues its development of continuous clay finishes. Meanwhile #matteobrioni al cubo has also launched its new, three-dimensional, line of objects with a system of modular surfaces for architecture named Arazzi.
This latest project stems from the application of methodologies typical of #design to a raw material like natural clay, the idea being to produce a range of single pieces that are simply mounted as if they were pictures on a wall. The set of modules allows ample scope for composition while combining skilled craftsmanship with the reliability of an industrial product.

Designed by Marialaura Rossiello, the project is displayed at two outstanding locations: Agape 12 (via Statuto 12) during the “Refinement” #event, and “Behind the scenes”, in collaboration with agapecasa, c/o Galleria Manzoni (via Manzoni 40/42), both of which are in the heart of the Brera #design District.

Arazzi was created under the art direction of the architect Marialaura Rossiello of Studio Irvine, who explains: “This is
inspired by a contemporary idea of modules and geometry. The inspiration comes from the tapestries of traditional textile art. Although coated with natural clay these modules are actually wooden frames, on which the clay is ‘warped’ thanks to the manual expertise of Matteo Brioni’s applicators. Arazzi’s basic idea is that of a boiserie in the shape of a three-dimensional, mono-material clay wall ‘picture’: a series-manufactured single piece offering endless scope for variation and uses.”

Added to Arazzi’s impressive textural and sensorial qualities are significant energy-saving and technical advantages. Thanks to its admirable acoustic and thermal insulation, clay plaster improves the qualities of an internal microclimate, besides filling the interior with warm light.

In a leap from past to present, a classic art form reinvented for the occasion is now a contemporary, modern system, ready to meet the needs of any situation!
This new “Matteo Brioni al cubo” concept also includes the Stratigrafie – presented in 2018 at #design Studio Irvine. These mono-material, three-dimensional ‘pictures’ deploy the 14 different clay plasters available from the #matteobrioni Colori della Terra collection.

Also on view, at “Behind the scenes”, in collaboration with agapecasa, c/o Galleria Manzoni, is Fuga flooring, designed by Studio Irvine.
Grafted into the Terraplus composite floor – a mixture of natural clay, mineral binder and resinous polymer additives for a stronger resistance to abrasion and water without losing its permeability – is the Fuga brass cross, again designed by Studio Irvine.

Matteo Brioni is also a technical partner at Agape’s and Wall&Deco’s “Havens” stand (Pad 22/A33-A32), at the #salonedelmobile.
This booth explores the concept of contemporary shelter, by means of a dialogue between objects and surfaces that define the spaces of rituals performed in the quietness of privacy.

The flooring chosen for “Havens” is the very latest Pavimento Terraplus Strutturato, presented for this occasion in its salt grey colour.
TerraPlus Strutturato is an evolution of the TerraPlus floor. Silicic sands used in controlled granulometric curves bring back textures and surfaces reminiscent of the old earthenware floors of lemon sheds and cellars, or beaches at low tide: structured and slightly irregular to the eye, pleasantly warm to the touch and to the feet.
