“Oluce on display with Vico”

Oluce will be one of the protagonists of the celebrations for the centenary of Vico Magistretti

Oluce, established in 1945, is the longest-standing Italian #design company still operating in the lighting sector and its history is intertwined with that of Vico Magistretti, one of the most popular Italian designers worldwide. The designer, who guided #oluce as its art director for many years, created some of the company’s most iconic products, leaving his unmistakable mark on the company and a heritage of products destined to become household names all over the world.

Oluce is therefore a key protagonist of the celebratory events organised for the one hundredth anniversary of Vico Magistretti’s birth and dedicated to the designer by the Fondazione studio museo Vico Magistretti, including a travelling exhibition to be staged in the branches of the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad with the support of the Foreign Ministry. Indeed, Oluce will feature in the form of sketches, #design drawings, and products in many of the expositions scheduled for 2020.

“100 years of Vico Magistretti” is the title of the travelling exhibition that traces back Magistretti’s sixty-year career with the aim of raising awareness on the designer’s works and working method. A series of entertaining exhibitions based on digitalised drawings, photographs, house and building projects, sketches and product catalogues. The exhibition will also feature some of the objects created by Magistretti that have become veritable icons of Italian design.

On one hand there’s the story of an architecture that is strongly rooted in the urban fabric and the local territory and has achieved important levels of excellence in defining forms and space, but above all, it focuses closely on the materials used, the structural details and the technical, constructive aspects. This same focus and accuracy is also found in the section dedicated to design, a resumé of the historic professional partnerships forged by #vicomagistretti with some of the most important Italian #design companies, including notably Oluce.

Kicking off in Cologne, opening stage of the exhibition, the rich material of the foundation will then move to Stockholm, Strasbourg, Prague, Berlin, Budapest and then on to New York.

Another important moment will be the grand exhibition of the whole work of Magistretti to be staged in April in the spaces of the Triennale di Milano at the same time as the Salone del Mobile event.

Oluce will be present in all the stages of the travelling exhibition and in the Triennale, with sketches and #design drawings of some of the most iconic lamps designed by Magistretti that made the company’s history: Sonora (1976), Atollo (1977) and Pascal (1983).

Various versions of the Atollo lamp which, over the years, has become the archetype of the table lamp, winning the Golden Compass Awardin 1979, will be on display during the exhibitions in New York, Stockholm and Strasbourg.

The rich calendar of events will therefore provide an unmissable opportunity for #design enthusiasts and students to encounter and learn more about one of the most significant pages in the history book of Italian #design, a chance to view unseen material conserved by the archives of Magistretti and of the companies he partnered, and a collection of some of the most important objects of mass produced furniture.
