Biennale Bulletin

Earlier this month I wrote about the helpful perspective brought by working with country participants from across the world, all of us living in our different, but similar, ways alongside Covid-19. We are all in it together, yet no two countries are exactly alike. The big question this month is around what happens next. It is likely that the next few weeks will provide some answers as countries feel their way, stage by stage, back to a kind of new normality.

Despite the uncertainty of our situation, it is comforting to see how human #design ingenuity is not only unstoppable, but thrives on the challenges: snorkelling masks being turned into ventilators, hygiene friendly door-openers, and 3D printed masks have all hit the headlines. In the digital sphere we have become quite used to all manner of digital ways of working and living - from meetings and conferences, to festivals and theatre, new sites appear daily turning what would have been physical into virtual attractions: from Frieze New York to the National Theatre at Home. Creative ingenuity and an appetite for it, is all around us, and it could not really be a better time to trial new screen-based ways of appealing to audiences and entertaining people.

It seems likely that some aspects of our lives will, of necessity, be affected in the future, yet we will find that for others we have discovered better (and more environmentally friendly) ways of doing things. It will be interesting to see which stick.

Here at #londondesignbiennale, from our virtual offices, we continue working with our venue partner, Somerset House, and our participants, as London gets sunnier day by day.  We look forward so much to welcoming you all to the #biennale. And in the meantime, we hope you and your families stay safe and well.
