Protext!
When fabric becomes manifesto
October 24, 2020—February 14, 2021
curated by Camilla Mozzato and Marta Papini
While it is true that the textile industry was central to the story of capitalism and luxury, and that cyclically this made it the focus of protest and social criticism, it is also true that textiles democratically concern everyone, and have always been the medium par excellence for expressing dissent. Banners, pennants, tops, and tapestries produced on artisan looms, like the art of quilting, are protest tools that have given voice the world over to political, social and ecological issues.
Through the most recent generation of artists, Protext! considers textiles, their different formal variations and their production processes as a transgressive artistic practice, and explores their front-line role in critical debates about authorship, queer identity and belonging, production methods and environmental change, as well as resistance to the established order.
