Vibia Headquarters’ Terraces: A Curated Display of Outdoor Lighting Collections

In 2019, #vibia opened its new headquarters in #Gavá, #Spain, near downtown Barcelona. Part inspirational #design centre, part functional workplace, the main building is bordered by a pair of terraces that seamlessly extend the space.

The two terraces—one large and one small—were designed by Barcelona-based #joseplluisxucla, who created Vibia’s minimalist Empty, Palo Alto, and Set lighting collections.
The outdoor space echoes the prevailing aesthetic of the headquarters with a spare and architectural style. It’s crafted of simple, natural materials, including timber decking, earthenware planters, iron pergolas, and a gravel perimeter.

Xuclà envisioned a multifaceted al fresco area to host visitors and display Vibia’s outdoor lighting. To that end, he incorporated a series of freestanding false walls in varying dimensions, positioned perpendicular to the walkway The partitions compartmentalize the expansive terrace and define different ambiances, creating open-air “rooms” that can accommodate a range of gatherings.

“By dividing up the space, they are adaptable to events,” explains Xuclà. “Depending on how many #people are attending, more or less space can be occupied.”

The walls also serve as a support for the pergolas, an essential #design element of the project. “It seemed a little abrupt to go from the showroom interior to the open air with just one step,” he says, “so the pergolas managed to create a zone filled with natural light as an intermediary space between indoors and outdoors.

A selection of #vibia outdoor lighting enlivens the terrace with organic silhouettes to complement the setting, including several by Xuclà. On the small terrace is Xuclà’s Empty, which features a sleek cantilevered perch with an LED light source tucked underneath. A sculptural floor lamp and furnishing in one, it doubles as a side table or seat during events.

His Palo Alto floor lamp brightens one end of the large terrace, its tree-like form featuring steel branches imbedded with slim swaths of LEDs. The Break floor lamp, which he designed with Alemany, stands next to one of the false walls, casting LED light in between the stacked cubes.

The Brisa fixture by Lievore, Altherr, Molina also appears on the large terrace. The lilting silhouette is inspired by the forest blue bell flower, lending a botanical look to the space.
Nearby is Antoni Arola and Enric Rodriguez’s Bamboo floor lamp, its slender stalk studded with LEDs.

Jordi Vilardell and Meritxell Vidal’s lowslung Meridiano lamp casts a radial sunburst pattern of light and shadow across the terrace and is used as additional seating or a table for entertaining. In another corner of the large terrace, several Wind floor lamps by Jordi Vilardell are
grouped together for maximum impact.

Their oversized scale creates a striking silhouette and the woven fiberglass drum shade adds a compelling webbed texture.
