Preview Cersaie 2021 | cut-up, the new covering by Mosaico+ resulting from a “cut”

Mosaico+ shows cut-up, a collection of modules made of Gres porcelain stoneware inspired by the homonymous literary technique born during Dadaism.

cut-up. The new #mosaico collection, which will be showed at Bologna during Cersaie 2021, takes its name from a well-known writing technique. It is a series of modules made of Gres porcelain stoneware, designed for indoor and outdoor floors and walls, which represents the first collaboration between Massimo Nadalini, art director of this brand, and Carlo Losi, aka CARDO.

However, the cut-up collection by #mosaico does not take only its name from the literary technique. The project by Massimo Nadalini and CARDO is inspired by the creative process being the basis of cut-up.

cut-up, the literary technique which cuts to give a new meaning to texts

Traced back to the 1920s with the Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara, cut-up has been widely used since the 1960s, by William Burroughs and by Brion Gysin, and afterwards by famous modern singer- songwriters such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Thom Yorke. This technique consists in physically cutting the text, leaving words or sentences unchanged. As it is the case for the editing of a film, several passages are then overlapped in a different way creating a new text. It is a fragmentation and reconstruction process like the one Massimo Nadalini and CARDO carried out.

As it is the case for the literary cut-up, we started from the accomplished work that is to say from the original plates made by CARDO together with Marianna Costi, where different overlapped portions of material and textures coexist., Massimo Nadalini explains. We divided the plates into portions combining small details of the accomplished work, only, and then we created some modules with a selection of these fragments. The one who carries out the setting writes, unconsciously, a new tale resulting from the random composition of modules”.

A collection in-between craftmanship and industrial process

The starting point for Cut-Up is 425 Concrete, the 2019 installation by CARDO and Marianna Costi focused on the ratio between cement and nature. Because of the power of that installation, Massimo Nadalini suggested to Carlo Losi that they created a surface together.

425 Concrete consists of vertical parallelepipeds made of cement castings, with inserts of natural elements and minerals. It is an encounter-clash between nature and cement, it is a challenge to understand to what extend these elements, which are so different, can coexist. Equally, for cut-up the challenge was to make the beauty of a manual and handcrafted product coexist with the strictness of the industrial process, Carlo Losi tells.

A new interpretation of what is small

The collection Cut-Up by #mosaico continues the reinterpretation of surfaces with a new version of what is small”, thanks to pre-cuts of tiles which seem to divide the module into several fragments.

cut-up consists of 14x42 modules, 8.5 mm thick, which are pre-cut and can be plastered, with a surface which mixes fragments of different textures. Once set and plastered, the modules cannot be read anymore and the surface turns into a complex combination of elements, forms, and different dimensions.

For the performance of the project, a staggered continuous setting is mandatory. To ensure the respect of the dimensions of the grout lines, it is necessary to use 3 mm spacers.

The fourth collection by #mosaico made of gres porcelain stoneware

cut-up is the forth collection by #mosaico made of gres porcelain stoneware, a resistant material which can be used both for floors and for walls, indoor and outdoor. For surfaces with a continuity between inside and outside.

The cut-up collection by #mosaico is available in four different colours: Ivory, Cold Ice, Mud, and Slate.
