Metropolis by Casalgrande Padana: the elegance of concrete
Metropolis by #casalgrandepadana offers a modern take on the austere, rigorous character of concrete, to create original surfaces with a striking visual impact.
With a key role in magnificent architectural and engineering works, well-known since ancient times to the Assyrians, Egyptians and Greeks, and mentioned by Vitruvius in his ‘De Architectura’, concrete took on the role of generating post-industrial trends, and was also very popular with the Brutalist architects of the 1950s and 1960s for its raw, anti-decorative appearance. Thanks to the architectural masterpieces of Cartesian geometry created by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, known worldwide as Le Corbusier, such as the Swiss Pavilion and the Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles, concrete became the symbol of modernity.
Traditionally known as a building element, thanks to its practical appeal and versatility, concrete has today become a #design element that can be used for tiling all kinds of surfaces, both indoors and outdoors.
Squared and rectified, the concrete-effect porcelain stoneware tiles in the Metropolis collection come in eight different shades, with a natural surface and a non-slip surface for outdoors. They are available in eight formats (from the classic 30x60 cm and 45x90 cm sizes up to the larger 90x180 cm, 120x120 cm and 120x278 cm tiles) and in four different thicknesses. This is a collection that goes beyond the modular tile concept, towards the #design of continuous, fluid spaces: thanks to the large formats, a sense of visual continuity can be created throughout settings, by laying the tiles with joints reduced to a minimum or barely perceptible, while the 6.5 mm thickness allows for endless style options, such as coverings for walls, backdrops, shelves, worktops, tables or wall-hung elements.
The excellent technical performance, and the material texture that feels similar to concrete, offer designers impressive options to express their creativity, allowing for customised application solutions for various types of projects, ranging from residential buildings to large commercial surfaces, as well as façade coverings.
Shades of elegance
Timeless, elegant, light and delicate, or dark, confident and striking, the colour grey embodies balance and sophistication, making it the ideal neutral base on which to build the style inspiration for an entire furnishing project. Easy to combine with any other colour, grey can slot in smoothly to all kinds of settings and styles, from metropolitan, modern and contemporary to ambiences with a Nordic inspiration, allowing you to go for either ton-sur-ton single-colour combinations or sharply contrasting shades.
Thanks to the availability of the natural surface for indoors and the non-slip surface for outdoors, and to the 20 mm thickness, the Metropolis concrete-effect stoneware tiles can also be laid outdoors, both with glue on screed and dry directly on sand, gravel or grass, thus helping to create attractive, sophisticated living spaces, using the same material for a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors.
