What's new at Cersaie 2021 - Gendai Wood by Casalgrande Padana: the natural harmony of wood-effect porcelain stoneware tiles

Gendai Wood, Casalgrande Padana’s new wood-effect collection, exquisitely replicates the veining and details of the original material that inspired it.

The Gendai Wood wood-effect collection is the result of research and experimentation, an advanced production process, and a fine selection of raw materials. The collection draws inspiration from Yakisugi or Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板), which means “charred cedar board” in Japanese. The Shou Sugi Ban technique was developed in 14th-century Japan when Sugi (cedar wood) was cut into thin boards, charred, and sealed with oil.

The new Gendai Wood collection comes in five colours (Gendai Black, Brown, Green, Grey, and White), one practical size (20x120 cm with a 9 mm thickness), polished and an anti-slip Grip finish. In addition, the tiles’ surface is waxed as a reminiscence of the original Shou Sugi Ban technique that covered the charred boards with natural oil.

Gendai Wood tiles have an appealing modern look and the durability and wear-resistance of porcelain stoneware. That’s why they are ideal for floors and walls, interiors and exteriors, residential, public, and restored buildings, and even the contract furnishing, retail, and hospitality sectors.

The imperfect veining of these wood-like porcelain stoneware tiles replicates the original material that inspired them, making them perfect for country, Nordic, or Wabi-Sabi style settings. The Shou Sugi Ban technique, which has inspired the Gendai Wood collection, is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and ties in with the Wabi-Sabi philosophy. Wabi-Sabi is based on transience and simplicity. It celebrates the way things change with time. It invites us to go beyond appearance, detach from the idea of perfection, and seek beauty and uniqueness in authenticity and imperfection.

The Gendai Wood large-format tiles are incredibly versatile and ideal for diagonal or straight installation. Laid diagonally at a 45-degree angle to the walls or parallel to the shorter or longer side, depending on the room’s size and depth, they can enhance the flooring’s veining and create stunning contemporary and timeless spaces.

Moreover, like all #casalgrandepadana porcelain stoneware tiles, they are environmentally sustainable, hypoallergenic, fire-resistant, easy to lay and clean, hard-wearing, non-absorbent, and feature excellent flexural strength. Whatever the latitude, these wood-effect tiles don’t fear temperature fluctuations and never warp. Their exceptional mechanical strength maintains all their features unchanged over time. But that’s not all. The Bios Antibacterial®  treatment (available upon request) is always active, day and night. This treatment helps remove 99% of the four main bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) from the tiles. Bios Antibacterial® uses a silver ion technology that removes bacteria and prevents their proliferation by inhibiting their metabolism.

The charming time-worn effect of the Gendai Wood collection takes you on a journey where nothing is finished, nothing lasts, and nothing is perfect. And the acceptance of the passing of time is expressed in the will to embrace imperfection. As a result, this collection provides unique, sophisticated tactile and textural sensations, while the wood-effect veining softened by the passing of time adds a sense of tranquillity and simplicity. All this helps create spaces full of character, where small imperfections become precious highlights.
