Jan Kath participates at the Salone del Mobile di Milano, from 7 to 12 June 2022, with Savonnerie Surprise, a rug collection reinterpreting traditional designs through the use of vivid colours and a free intermingling of linear and formal elements

Jan Kath, a German brand specialised in the #design and production of hand-knotted rugs, presents Savonnerie Surprise: the inspiration behind this series of rugs stems from a desire to take a fresh look at the ancient tradition through a unique contemporary filter that sublimates an original and visionary aesthetic, while testifying to Jan Kath’s constant focus on the history and roots of the ancient art of textiles.

Savonnerie Surprise further enriches the elements of the Erased Heritage collection, conceived as a tribute to traditional rugs and reinterpreted thanks to a superimposition of pattern and colour. The collection comprises hand-knotted rugs that reinterpret the Baroque graphic motifs typical of the XVII century French tradition.

The name of the series flanks that of the Savonnerie, an ancient soap factory operating in the late 1600 and destined to become one of the most prestigious European manufactories of hand-knotted rugs, with the term surprise, as if to suggest the personal and unexpected reinterpretation of the iconography typical of that period. Hence the typical designs, such as medallions, crests, floral elements, and foliage framed by Greek frets and embellished by geometric patterns and splashes of colour.

The use of two different materials enables the creation of the details characterising each rug. Hand combed and hand spun highland wool is used to recreate the patterns of European tradition while Jan Kath’s imagination is freely expressed in an extremely fine Chinese silk: intense saturated hues stand out against delicate pastel shades, tracing lines, geometric patterns, and colours that overspread while enhancing the original #design.
