A zero-energy workshop in the Basque Country

Designed as an efficient and sustainable production tool, this place is intended to inspire cooperative members who work there as well as clients and inquiring minds from around the world.

"Created in 1981, the #alki cooperative has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. It has, however, always been able to stay on course and remain true to its ambition as a stakeholder engaged in the economic and cultural development of the #basque Country by creating sustainable, quality jobs.

Building this new #workshop is a major step for us: it is the means through which we can best foster our growth and assist our clients while at the same time look to the future.

Respecting our land and controlling our environmental impact have always been key issues addressed by #alki and are naturally central to this architectural project. This innovative #workshop will also strengthen the alliance between the craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology, which characterises the expertise of our artisans, placed at the service of our clients.

Beyond the production tool, we wanted to provide an inspiring place for creation and a convivial place where we will be delighted to welcome you, not only for meetings but also for professional and cultural exchanges."

Eñaut Jolimon de Haraneder Chairman and CEO of #alki

The Architectural Project

The core features of this project, designed by the architectural firm #leibarseigneurinarchitectes, are the efficiency of the production tool and a quest for energy sobriety.

Topographical integration
As the site slopes quite sharply (an incline of 7 meters), the building’s
architecture has been adapted to the topography with minimum land occupation. #alki decided to install its production #workshop in the limelight on the first floor while the offices, showroom, relaxation area and car parking spaces are situated in the lower part of the building.

Geometric simplicity
The structure’s square shape has less façade compared to an elongated layout. This aspect, which allows a 50.40% occupation of the plot’s surface area, has also led the cooperative to change production organisation from a linear to a circular model.

Process improvement
Construction of the new #workshop presented an opportunity to review and improve the brand’s manufacturing process. So #alki will reduce the emission of its volatile organic compounds by 80% and all its wood waste will be used to manufacture by-products

No heating, no air-conditioning
Temperature fluctuations, humidity levels and air quality will be controlled thanks to high-performance insulation, thus allowing the cooperative to avoid the use of any air cooling and heating systems in the #workshop.

Optimal use of natural light
The new building has been designed to take full advantage of natural light with only occasional use of artificial light by making the most of the sun’s direction and large openings in the building’s facades.

100 % renewable energy
Annual production of energy from solar panels installed on the building’s roof will fully cover the place’s needs. These energy producing installations are linked to Enargia, the local supplier of renewable energy.
