A Japanese company specialised in the production of grip mechanisms based in Tokyo, Arakawa &Co., Ltd. is
internationally renowned for its revolutionary “Arakawa Grip”, a cable gripping device for suspension conceived
by the brand’s founder Hideo Arakawa. This product can be used, among other things, to create display systems for showrooms and cutting-edge suspension systems for paintings in art galleries and museums. During the Milano Design week, from 15 to 20 April 2024, Arakawa & Co., Ltd. will present “by arakawagrip” under the creative direction of Kaori Akiyama from STUDIO BYCOLOR, an itinerary composed by three installations within the exhibition space Zona K in via Spalato 11 in the Isola Design district.
“Biblioteca d’oro” (Golden Library), devoted to suspension. The first installation, entitled "Biblioteca d'Oro" by Arakawa & Co., Ltd., is dedicated to the volume published to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary under the title “50 GRIPS - ARAKAWA and 50 Creators Connecting Design Possibilities”. Seated on a chair suspended from the ceiling with the device Arakawa Grip, guests will be able to flip through the pages of the volume and experience the feeling of fluctuating in lightness. They will thus be able to appreciate the functionalities of the system which can be adapted to any height making both adults and children perfectly comfortable. The space of the “Golden Library” will be set up by interior designers Takanori Urata and Maki Izawa with the aim of expressing the various creative possibilities offered by Arakawa Grip in a refined atmosphere welcoming visitors, architects, and designers. Lastly, STUDIO BYCOLOR has chosen to redefine Arakawa Grip by changing its colour from silver to gold to imbue it with an authoritative and predominant presence within the space. The preciousness of the metal is also the focus of the graphic design project for the commemorative volume created by Sdanley Shen of MULTISTANDARD.
"New Normal New Standard - Japanese Maison”, the future of Arakawa
The second installation is called “New Normal New Standard - Japanese Maison” - by Arakawa & Co., Ltd. and involves six Japanese designers who work with the second generation of the family business to experiment not only with new products but also with new directions and future goals. The project is signed by Tomoki Doi, Takanori Urata, Kaori Akiyama, Maki Izawa, Kairi Eguchi, and Yosuke Shimano.
“Composition”, fluctuating sculptures
Lastly, the third installation entitled “Composition”, curated by Kairi Eguchi, product designer from Osaka,
stimulates the creativity of seven young designers from the same Japanese metropolis. Daen Design, En Furniture, PUBLIC SERVICE, Kiriko Higashiyama, KOKA,Yuji Tsukamoto, and Kairi Eguchi tried their hand at designing cell phones and kinetic sculptures that employ Arakawa Grip based on the theme “Float”. Their works are the result of a thorough research about materials and their floating capacity
