The work by Berlin-based artist #hanskotter focuses on the basic physical-artistic elements of light, colour and space. His interest lies in the appearance and effect of these elements under different material conditions.

Light holds a special fascination for Kotter. For many years, he has concerned himself with the medium of light, its composition, its physical conditions, its colours, its perception and its cultural history. His work comprises both minimalist individual objects and large-scale installations.

Light – Colour – Space presents both a cross section of Kotter’s work and variants of well-known series such as Colour Code or Interference. His mostly clear and geometric works often shine in uncountable colour combinations. They playfully change between light and darkness, they confuse visual perception, seem to change the environment or to move, or, as in Perfect Angle, seem to disintegrate into fragments.

For the MAKK exhibition, #hanskotter has specially created Rise and Fall, an installation suspended in space. The monochrome LED lights are programmed in such a way that the individual elements of this light sculpture seem to hover in space and – as the name already indicates – seem to rise and fall.

Hans Kotter has received several awards and his work has been shown the world over in almost 100 solo and group exhibitions. It is included in many museum collections, also in the MAKK’s, which will be presenting his piece Explosion in the reopened #design exhibition Art + #design in Dialogue.

The exhibition is part of the international Light Art Project Collumina, which will be staged in #cologne from 11 to 13 March 2020. For this occasion, the light artists Hartung and Trenz (based respectively in #cologne and Munich) will be showing a light installation in the MAKK’s courtyard and the Canadian artist duo Adriana Kuiper and Ryan Suter will be presenting an installation in the museum’s lounge area. On the opening night, 11th March, a mobile light installation by New York based artist Denzel Russell will illuminate the MAKK’s forecourt.
