The company GENERAL DECORATION (GEDE) was created by the Belgian designer Jules Wabbes in 1969 for the manufacture of his lamps and
metal accessories. He created GEDE to enlarge its range of models originally developed for Le Mobilier Universel, his first company. From its beginning in 1952, the designer develops at the same time a lamp, a table model and a stool.
Today, his first lamp, the Honeycomb Wall Lamp, is part of the GEDE catalog which included forty models: lamps, fire & bathroom accessories, hooks, ashtrays, handles. These products will be gradually manufactured. For now, fifteen models are offered for sale in different finishes. They are strictly like the original crafts produced by Jules Wabbes in Belgium.
After Jules Wabbes death in 1974, GEDE continued its activity under the direction of his wife, the author and illustrator of children’s books, Marie Wabbes. But over time, despite the loyalty of customers mainly composed of architects and designers, the company has been kept dormant because the craftsmen have retired and no one in the family had the time or qualification be following up editing objects.
We had to find skilled craftsmen and study each model with plans and documents kept in the family Wabbes, existing models and make
several prototypes to be able to propose these products.
GEDE: VINCENT COLET AND MARIE FERRAN-WABBES
In March 2014, Vincent Colet bought GENERAL DECORATION from Marie Wabbes and her children. He then asked Marie Ferran, childhood friend and daughter of Jules Wabbes, to join him in this adventure to help strip the archives and the realization of prototypes.
Vincent Colet, a cabinetmaker, was an antique dealer before becoming publisher of modern objects. Marie Ferran is an art historian, she has curated with Iwan Strauven a retrospective at the Fine Arts Palace (Jules Wabbes. Furniture Designer, A+, Bozar, Brussels, 2012), she has published several books on the work of his father whose she is an expert like Vincent Colet.
