  • The call for artists launched by DS Automobiles created an unprecedented buzz among craftsmen and women from very different backgrounds.
  • Within a few weeks, tens of artists sent in applications.
  • DS x MÉTIERS D’ART is entering a new phase, getting closer to naming the winner who will make a unique DS 9 interior.

Launched in April, the DS x MÉTIERS D’ART competition, united some tens of professional artists around a common goal: to present new techniques, new materials and new answers that can be displayed in a unique DS 9 and feed into DS Automobiles creativity.

Implicit since its launch as the embodiment of French luxury expertise, the DS Automobiles brand continues to build bridges between the best French artists and craftsmen and its own creations. From working with leather, its stitching or unexpected materials such as feather or straw marquetry, DS Automobiles has become a specialist in including original expertise in its production models and concept cars.

During June, ten candidates have been shortlisted and accompanied by the DS Automobiles #design teams to produce one or two samples that represent their expertise and their aims.

The ten DS x MÉTIERS D’ART candidates are:

  • Anne Leroux, Maison Pavane
  • Anne Lopez, General creative
  • Studio Laura Leblanc, Textile design
  • Studio Martin Berger, Movement-Light-Emotion
  • Charlotte Kaufmann, Textile design
  • Dimitri Hlinka and Nicolas Pinon
  • Jean-Baptiste Saint-Criq, Cercus marquetry
  • Line and Raphaël, Print me a sheep
  • Paulina Okurowska, Contemporary mosaics
  • Stéphanie Lacoste, Textile curiosity

The jury got together in July to view the work of these ten candidates and enjoy an exchange of views via video conference with each of them to better understand their personality and background.

The jury comprised seven members:

  • Pascal Morand, executive president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode
  • Lison de Caunes, Master of art in straw marquetry
  • Hubert Barrère, Artistic director of Maison Lesage and corset maker
  • Anna Le Corno, Cabinet maker and creative at the studio Farouche Paris
  • Béatrice Foucher, DS Automobiles CEO
  • Thierry Metroz, DS Automobiles #design Director
  • Jean-Philippe Vanhulle, DS Automobiles Head of the upholstery studio

Three finalists will be chosen. They will then be given a piece of trim from a DS 9 door panel on which they’ll have to apply the same techniques used on their sample project chosen by the jury.

This work will be presented during a special event organised in Chantilly on 14 September 2021. The winner will then make the entire interior trim for a unique DS 9.

Pascal Morand, Executive president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode: “DS x MÉTIERS D’ART is a time for sharing. Creating is always a surprise. In what’s been shown, there’s a desire for techno-creative innovation. French creativity is dear to my heart. It’s important for the culture and the economy of this country. This creativity conveys a tradition and an aesthetic, in harmony with our own identity, all while being open to the world. It is an element of development and competitiveness.”

Thierry Metroz, DS Automobiles #design Director: “The level of creativity and commitment shown by the DS x MÉTIERS D’ART candidates is impressive. Since the beginning of DS Automobiles, we have been working with great craftsmen with exceptional expertise to bring French luxury to life. This initiative aims to discover additional talent by getting it in front of us and by getting new challenges in front of them to create new opportunities.

Lison de Caunes, Master of art in straw marquetry: “I’m delighted to discover new craftsmen and new materials. I’m also always impressed by the intellectual approach of each craftsman to each project. The manual expertise is complemented by the thinking which plays a very important part. It’s exciting to see all these materials, the way in which they’re used and applied to the field of the automobile. It’s pretty unexpected for all these craftsmen.

Hubert Barrère, Artistic director of Maison Lesage and corset maker: “I love the initiative of #dsautomobiles DS represents French #automotive excellence. Pursuing this idea of an ambassador of etiquette and French luxury seems quite right to me, like working with art professionals from fashion who have a very different expertise and where each excels in their own field. All sides benefit.

Anna Le Corno, Cabinet maker and creative at the studio Farouche Paris: “The chance to discover so much expertise is a luxury. To see craftsmen work on a specific problem is always very inspirational. It is a pleasure to be a part of this jury and to be stimulated by the synergies that DS x MÉTIERS D’ART created. I had favourites and I saw very poetic takes on the interpretation of material and the relationship with the car.
