Design notes from London Design Festival

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Milan has been our office for the week. Between the poolside aperitivos and negroni fountains, we were inspired by many of the ideas and conversations taking shape at Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone – find out our edit below. Plus, this month's V&A Lates is all about performance and listen in on Dezeen's Climate Salon.

Getting creative in Milan

This year's Milan #design Week saw experiments across the city fromECAL's investigationsaround how we can redesign wind turbines for urban environments to 'Prepper's Pantry,' an installation by mudacthat looked at the subculture of being prepared for emergencies with objects for survival

In Brera #design District, natural stonebrandSolidNatureshowcased the possibilities of its wares with an immersive underground experience designed by architects OMA that included swivelling illuminated walls. Back on ground level, visitors could sit on Bita Fayyazi's seating and a dining area by Sabine Marcelis featured a food display by Laila Gohar (pictured).

Dozie Kanu's pavilion for fragrance brand Byredo explored his relationship with the African continent and Afro Diasporic culture. Over inIsola #design District, metaphysics was the influence behind the showcase of designers including Brazil-based Natasha Bernardo, Mexico-based Aura Carpio and Japan-based Ryoji Takahashi. For some relaxing, we headed to the Bocci apartment and Google's serene exhibition 'Shaped by Water' with Lachlan Turczan.Stay turned for more highlights on our Instagram.

What's on: Dance: Sounding Futures

This month's V&A Late will celebrate the power of music. Coinciding with the Performance Festival, this #event will explore how sound and vibration are narrative expressions. There will be instrumental soundscapes altering our state of perception and moments to switch off and 'dance to the beat of your own drum.'

Discuss: The purpose of #design weeks

In Milan, our editor Sujata Burman joined a conversation with Emilie Robinson of Map Project Office, Sam Philpott from Lotus Tech Creative Centre and curator Anniina Koivuon on the future of #design weeks unpacking why and if it is important to have these events across the globe. The talk interrogated what #design weeks are doing for creative communities and the balance between the critical and the commercial. Discover Map Project Office's series of podcasts, 'Where Next'?

Listen: Climate Salon

A new series into how designers and architects can play a role in tackling climate change has launched byDezeenand SketchUp. The first conversation is between architect Siv Helene Strangeland, designer Tom Dixon and Sumele Adelana from SketchUp on how to live in a more sustainable way. "The local boroughs have a huge part to play because they own building stock, they influence the work that happens in their boroughs," said Adelana on the topic.Keep listening.

Visit in Germany: Lessons from Arab Architecture

Curated by Ahmed and Rashid Bin Shabib at Vitra #design Museum, 'Hot Cities' is an exhibition about learning from architecture in the Arab speaking world. The showcase will have urban case studies on how architects manage with the issues around living in a hot city and how to help make environments more climate resilient. The display will be a forum for idea exchanging and will include architectural styles that span ancient to contemporary. Opening on 29 April.
